Research on the biology, aquaculture and taxonomy of tropical marine oysters started in 1994 and work on oyster research represent the thrust research in aquaculture at the station. Three commercial species are studied,Crassostrea belcherii (the white scar), C.iredalei (the black scar) and Saccostrea cuculata (the rock oyster).

        As a result of the research and development work on oysters the centre is able to produce high quality oyster seeds on demand. The seeds are sold to farmers and traders where income from these help fund further research.
